Tax Guide
How tax pressure works in Cropdeck, which pets and classes reduce taxes, and how to build margin buffers that survive any season.
Taxes Are A Build Constraint
Cropdeck asks you to care about more than gross yield. A run that looks strong can still fail if tax pressure removes the margin you expected to keep. As Discord players confirm: tax management is the most common reason runs end.
How Tax Pressure Works
Each field has a tax target displayed before you enter. Some fields require multiple tax thresholds over time — you do not pay once and forget. Tax goals increase as you progress through the 3 standard seasons, and they continue climbing in endless mode.
The developer confirmed: “The taxes are getting higher each season, but there are decks that can go endless.” Endless mode has no hard cap — taxes keep rising, but optimized builds can outpace them.
Pets That Reduce Taxes
Each pet provides a different tax-related passive. The known pets and their effects:
| Pet | Tax Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aston the Good Boy (Dog) | 20% tax reduction | 5 tiers. Dog V does not feel much harder than Dog IV per player Noodles. |
| Matilda the Cow | 25% tax reduction | Higher base reduction than Dog. |
| Gorilla | Tax penalty / extra tax pressure | Hardest pet to win with. Piotrek recommends Grains class to offset. |
| Cat (Kitty) | Higher tax scaling | Players report struggling: “That was a bitch” and “I’m stuck at the last level.” |
| Donkey | Unique tax interaction | Described as “fun to use.” |
| Kuvo | Farming-oriented tax profile | Water/synergy-focused pet. |
All pets have 5 tiers each. Higher tiers increase tax pressure in exchange for stronger pet passives. The developer plans to add achievements for completing all 5 tiers of a pet.
Grains Class: Tax Reduction Through Crops
The Grains card class reduces tax pressure when you play Grains-class crops. Wheat is the known Grains crop (unlock requirement: harvest 50 yields from fertilized crops).
When playing Gorilla (the hardest pet for tax management), the developer’s strategy is: “I would try to go with the Grains class crops if possible to reduce the tax, so I can have more scarecrows.” This trade-off — sacrificing crop slots for tax relief to free up scarecrow slots — is the core tax-management decision.
Think In Buffers
Before taking a narrow synergy pick, ask whether the current build can survive a weaker draw, a bad market turn, or a weather interruption. The answer is your tax buffer.
Buffer Checklist
- Always reserve enough gems for the next tax payment. Do not spend your last gems at the Market.
- Grains-class crops act as passive tax relief. Prioritize them if tax pressure is your main threat.
- Tax-relief pets (Dog, Cow) are easier to pilot. Start with them before attempting Gorilla or Cat.
- Check the field’s tax target before entering. If multiple thresholds are required, plan your sells across days rather than all at once.
- 15% tax increase can be accidental. One player reported choosing a +15% tax modifier without realizing it, which dramatically impacted their run.
Endless Mode and Taxes
In endless mode, taxes continue to rise each season. Players reaching Season 18+ report that the tax scaling eventually plateaus in difficulty — not because taxes stop growing, but because optimized builds outscale them. One player at Season 18 reported “at 25,655/3,840” — earning nearly 7x the tax requirement.
The snowball effect is a known balance concern: “once it’s going well, what one earns snowballs massively and the difficulty doesn’t really increase.” The developer is aware and has discussed adding more ascension tiers to address this.
Use The Calculator Transparently
The Profit Calculator applies the visible inputs you enter. It does not claim hidden game truth. Adjust base yield, multiplier, tax rate, and market modifier as your own notes improve.
Review After Patches
Tax-related advice should be rechecked after balance changes. The developer released a patch on May 8 specifically adjusting early difficulty for first pet tiers. Tax values may shift in future updates.
